As “falling leaves drift by the window,” it’s time to think of trees. Local expert Brad Riphagen of Trees Forever will lead a tree walk Thursday, Oct. 29, at 2 pm at Squirrel Hollow Park southeast of Jefferson.
The walk’s a chance to stop and notice the trees. Riphagen will talk about species, habitat, and care of trees and answer any tree-related questions. It’s also a great opportunity to stroll outside on a fall afternoon and enjoy the park.
Squirrel Hollow Park is a 56-acre park southeast of Jefferson set in timber. It’s the second oldest county park in Iowa and is known for its scenic bluffs overlooking the Raccoon River and its New Deal-era structures.
This is the sixth tree walk sponsored by the Jefferson tree committee, but the first since 2023. This walk is co-sponsored for the first time by the Friends of Greene County Iowa Parks. Squirrel Hollow Park is located at 1888-1898 277th St. The tour will meet at the shelter house (turn left when entering the park). No registration is required.
